Let's bring the spirit of Christmas into your house before the holiday actually arrives. You can do this easily, with very little effort.
When it comes to decorating for Christmas, there are many who focus primarily on one room only. Usually the family room or living room or great room. While it is important to have a focal point, i.e. your Christmas tree, you should also think about decorating the rest of your home as well.
Wreathes and garlands are a waming touch to your entry and staircase. I purchased relatively expensive wreathes at a shop going out of business for half price. I use them year after year, refreshing them with a fine mist of water or febreze. Steaming out the ribbons. I even added a few drops of christmastree scented oil to the branches this year! Store them in tissue separated by cardboard in sturdy boxes.
Candles in beautiful votives can add a festive flair as well as a wonderful scent to any room. Try using one or two on your vanity in the bathroom. Adding christmas themed hand towels and soaps adds a nice touch.
Of course the dining room is the hub of every family holiday meal. Table runners, candlesticks, holiday dinnerware are a must. If you dont have fancy china or tableware. Try using simple white dishes with a red or green charger plate. Little things like changing out your everyday tapers to red or green ones adds to the festive look of the room.
Try making napkin holders with tartan or a gold lame ribbon and little holly berries or pinecones. A little hot glue goes a long way. I use the wire edged ribbons, they hold their shape wonderfully. Again these can be used year after year with careful storage. For delicate things like pinecone ribbon napkin holders first wrap in tissue then store in a baggy, you can put one or two in each, then blow air into the bag and seal. The air acts like a bubblewrap. It really helps to keep things from getting crushed.
Keep your action list handy, a simple spiral notebook will do. Keep lists of things you own and things you need to purchase. Update your list every year when putting things away.
Remember don't stress it. Enjoy the process and include the whole family. And don't forget the Christmas music to get everyone in the mood!
